Georgetown Day captures MAC Track & Field Championship in close finish over Sidwell Friends
In an exhilarating, down-to-the-wire finish at the Bullis School on Saturday, Georgetown Day School captured the 2026 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC) Track & Field Championship title with a narrow victory over Sidwell Friends, the 2025 defending champions.
The entire championship came down to the final event, the 4x400m relay. With the team title hanging in the balance, Georgetown Day's quartet of James Fitzgibbons (Jr.), Andrew Leopold (Sr.), Adam Ramzy (Sr.), and Nate Zia (Sr.) not only won the race to secure the team championship for GDS, but they shattered the MAC championship meet record in the process, clocking a time of 3:24.80. The Mighty Hoppers finished with 171 points to 166 for the Quakers.
Contributors to the Georgetown Day victory included: Amit Tate (Sr.) in the 110m hurdles; Andrew Bennett (Sr.) in the 3200m run; and Andrew Leopold (Sr.), who captured an individual championship in the 300m Hurdles before playing a critical role on the record-setting, title-clinching 4x400m relay team.
Winners of multiple individual events included Stephen Calkins (Sr.) of Potomac, who swept the 200m and 400m dashes; James Mirembe (Sr.) of Saint James, who captured gold in both the 800m and 1600m runs; and William Idoniboye (So.) of Sidwell Friends, who won both the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
